Seiko 5 Sports SRPD Review: Best Automatic Under $300
The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD replaced the legendary SKX007, but does it live up to its predecessor? Our honest review of the best automatic under $300.
📑 Table of Contents
When Seiko killed the SKX007 in 2019, the Seiko 5 Sports SRPD series stepped in to fill the gap. Cheaper, with an upgraded movement and exhibition case back, but with compromises that frustrated longtime fans. Is it still the best automatic under $300? Let's find out.
What's New vs. SKX007
- Movement: Upgraded to Cal. 4R36, hand-winding and hacking, 41-hour reserve. Better than the 7S26.
- Crystal: Still Hardlex mineral (not sapphire upgrade).
- Crown: Now at 4 o'clock, comfortable but not screw-down.
- Water Resistance: Dropped to 100m from 200m.
- ISO 6425: Removed, no longer a dive watch.
- Case Back: Exhibition (display), controversial.
The Honest Truth
The SRPD is a fantastic watch, just not a dive watch. The 4R36 movement is genuinely better than the SKX's 7S26. The hand-winding and hacking are useful. Build quality is solid. But the loss of screw-down crown and ISO certification means this is a sports watch, not a tool watch.
On the Wrist
The 42.5mm case is identical in size to the SKX. The exhibition case back lets you appreciate the surprisingly well-decorated 4R36. The bracelet is upgraded with solid end-links. The watch wears more refined than its predecessor.
Variant Selection
The SRPD61 (blue dial) and SRPD63 (green dial) are particularly attractive. The "Bottle Cap" SRPE99 with red bezel offers a sportier vibe. All hover around $275-310 at retail.
Versus Used SKX007
A used SKX007 in good condition costs $400-500, more than a new SRPD. The SRPD has the better movement; the SKX has the better case (screw-down crown, 200m, ISO). It depends what you prioritise: movement quality or tool-watch credibility.
Verdict
The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD is the best automatic sports watch you can buy new for under $300. It is not the SKX007 replacement many wanted, but as a daily-wear sports watch, it remains exceptional value.
