  5. Verdict

While most "tactical" watches are designed to look military, the Marathon Government Search and Rescue (GSAR) is genuine military issue. Marathon has supplied the US, Canadian, and Norwegian armed forces since 1939. The GSAR available to civilians is identical to the one on a Pararescue jumper's wrist.

Build to Specification

The case is built to MIL-PRF-46374G, the official military watch specification. 316L stainless steel, 41mm diameter, sterile dial (no logo on early-issue versions), and the unmistakable government NSN-style markings on the case back.

Tritium Tubes (H3)

The GSAR uses tritium gas tubes (H3) for illumination. Unlike Super-LumiNova, tritium tubes glow continuously for 25+ years without needing charging from light. In a search and rescue operation at night, this is non-negotiable.

Movement: ETA 2824-2 Automatic

The ETA 2824-2 is the ultimate workhorse movement — accurate, reliable, easy to service anywhere in the world. Marathon's government contracts require parts availability for decades. This is a watch built to be maintained, not replaced.

Real-World Use

Worn for two weeks of regular activity and one long hiking trip, the GSAR felt indestructible. The 41mm case, while utilitarian, sits well on the wrist. The rubber strap is functional but quickly swaps for NATO. The 300m water resistance and screw-down crown handle real-world abuse.

Verdict

The Marathon GSAR is the most authentic military watch civilians can buy. The tritium tubes are an operational advantage, not a gimmick. For genuine field use, no luxury watch comes close.
