Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 Review: The Holy Grail Sports Watch
The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 is the most coveted steel sports watch in the world. Designed by Gérald Genta, discontinued, and trading at multiples of retail.

Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta in 1976, it was originally derided as "expensive steel" — today it commands $150,000+ on the secondary market.
The Genta Genius
Genta's sketch was inspired by a porthole. The integrated bracelet, horizontally embossed dial, and rounded octagonal bezel are unmistakable. The 5711 case is just 8.3mm thick — slim enough to slip under a French cuff, sporty enough for a polo shirt.
Movement: Cal. 26-330 S C
The 5711 houses the in-house calibre 26-330 S C — a 45-hour automatic with rotor in 21K gold. Finishing is exquisite even where you can't see it: Geneva stripes, perlage, polished bevels. This is haute horlogerie.
The Discontinuation
Patek discontinued the 5711 in 2021, replaced briefly by the green-dial 5711/1A-014 (also discontinued). The successor is the larger Cubitus collection. The 5711 is now a closed chapter — and that scarcity drives prices.
On the Wrist
I had the privilege of wearing a friend's 5711 for an afternoon. The integrated bracelet hugs the wrist with extraordinary fluidity. The blue dial shifts from navy to azure depending on light. It feels like wearing jewellery and a tool simultaneously.
Should You Buy One?
If you have $150,000 to deploy and want a watch that will likely appreciate, the 5711 is hard to beat. For wearing pleasure alone, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas or Audemars Piguet Royal Oak deliver comparable craftsmanship at lower secondary-market premiums.
Verdict
The Nautilus 5711 is more an asset than a watch at current prices. As an object, it is sublime. As a purchase, it is a financial decision more than an emotional one.
