Who Is Behind Baltic?

Baltic was founded in 2016 by Etienne Malec. On the brand's About page, he explains that his interest in watches began when he discovered his late father's collection and the diary his father kept of every watch he came across. The name refers to his father's roots on the northern coast of Poland.

The brand sells directly to customers rather than through a network of traditional dealers, which it says removes the usual industry margin and keeps prices lower. Its website also lists stores where you can try the watches, but the core of the business is online.

Where Baltic Watches Are Made

Baltic is unusually open about this, and it is worth reading carefully. According to the brand, most of its components are produced in Hong Kong. The watches are then assembled and adjusted at its atelier in Besançon, France, where it also makes its straps, while its accessories line comes from Italy. Baltic says it wants to avoid "the ambiguity that has been the bane of the horology industry", and that transparency is a genuine point in its favour.

It also means a Baltic is not a Swiss or French watch in the sense of a luxury manufacture. It is a well-designed watch, assembled in France from mostly Asian-made parts, powered by Japanese movements. For the price, that is a reasonable and honest recipe.

The Main Models

Aquascaphe

The Aquascaphe is the watch that made Baltic's name, a vintage-styled diver with a sapphire bezel. The current Aquascaphe MK2, which went on sale in September 2025, is the first to come in two sizes. According to Baltic's specifications, it measures 37mm or 39.5mm across, with a lug-to-lug of 45mm or 47mm. It uses a double-domed sapphire crystal, a unidirectional sapphire bezel with 120 clicks, a screw-down crown and 200m of water resistance. Inside is the Miyota 9039 without a date, or the Miyota 9015 for the date version, both with about 42 hours of power reserve.

At launch, Monochrome reported prices before tax of €630 on rubber, €655 for the date version on rubber, €695 on a steel bracelet and €720 for the date version on a bracelet.

Aquascaphe GMT MK-II

The GMT version is 39.5mm across, 47mm from lug to lug and 13.8mm thick, with a bidirectional 48-click sapphire bezel and 200m of water resistance. It uses the Miyota 9075, a "true" GMT movement whose local hour hand can be set on its own, which is the more useful layout for travellers. The power reserve is 42 hours.

HMS

The HMS collection is Baltic's dressier, 1940s-inspired line. The HMS 002, for example, has a 38mm stepped steel case, 47mm from lug to lug and 13mm thick including its high-domed acrylic (hesalite) crystal, or 10mm without it. It uses the Miyota 8315 automatic with a 60-hour power reserve and is water resistant to 50m. The acrylic crystal suits the vintage look, but it scratches more easily than sapphire, although light scratches can usually be polished out.

Warranty, Returns and Shipping

Baltic's warranty lasts two years from the date of shipment. Customers have 14 days from delivery to return a watch for a refund or exchange, using a free return slip, and the watch must be unused and in its original packaging. Shipping is free on orders from €80. Buyers in the UK should note that Baltic collects VAT only on purchases under €150, so taxes and customs fees on a watch above that are not included in the price.
